Community Health Center Support Services

In May 2002 the President of the United States announced his intention to expand the number of community health centers across the United States, with a goal of impacting 1,200 communities by the end of 2006. The comprehensiveness and quality of services at community health centers is viewed as an efficient way to eliminate health care disparities and substantially improve access The Presidents’ initiative can be downloaded at

Illinois is home to approximately 12.3 million people, 11.6% of which live below poverty and 14% of whom are uninsured. In 2005, 893,391 persons were served by community health centers in Illinois; 311,351 or 35% were uninsured.

Illinois Primary Health Care Association is committed to the Presidents initiative to increase access to healthcare and reduce disparities through development of new community health center access points. The Community Health Services section provides technical assistance to developing and operating community health centers throughout the state. Entities interested in developing a community health center in Illinois are encouraged to contact John Malan, Vice President of Member Services and Data Activities.

The Community Health Services team provides technical assistance in the development and operation of community health centers, designations of Medically Underserved Areas/Populations and Health Professional Shortage Areas, provider recruitment, financial and clinical operations, outreach and enrollment for Medicaid/KidCare and Medicare programs, capital and work-force analysis and planning, web-based research and a host of data related activities. Additionally, the team members participate in a growing number of advisory boards, committees, and work groups. Our mission is to represent community health center (CHC) interests and collect intelligence for CHCs.
